I think one of the most important things in a relationship for me is communication. Josh and I started playing the questions game long before we started dating. The rules to the questions game? They are simple: You can ask the other party anything you want no limits, but the more intrusive you are the more you give them permission to be as well. You can ask a question, but then they get to ask one back. It's like truth or dare but no dare. It started out as us asking questions from the "IF" book, and ended up spiraling out control as we occupied the majority of our shifts on the phones at Continental by e-mail each other questions back and forth.
We learned a lot about each other, and having gone though difficult relationships the closer we got to dating the more personal the questions became. We have found that even today when we are bored we can come up with a number of questions to ask, and have waisted hours online asking silly questions back and forth. . .
When it comes to more serious matters we have found ways to communicate. One of our silly tricks is if we are upset with each other or feel like we are angry and might say something hurtful we stop talking and get on MSN, we can sit on the couch next to each other and type our conversation giving us that extra few seconds to hear the other person out and come up with a reasonable and compassionate response rather than snapping back a quick and hurtful reply. If we are really just that angry we might sit a few feet away or even into another room to talk until we can calm down. It's silly but we honestly have found it works. It's a way to express everything with out getting cut off.
We have always found a way to tell one another everything, for good, bad or worse, and we have been able to grow close because of it. We have seen each other through hard times and lived some wonderful times together, I am very grateful we can communicate :)
